Microfiber mops have taken over commercial cleaning in recent years, and for good reason.
At Optimal Prime Cleaning Services, we clean most of our accounts with commercial microfiber mops unless there’s a specific reason a client needs a traditional cotton string mop. Why are we on a bit of a quest to get most of Sioux Falls switched over to microfiber? Because in most situations, it’s simply the better tool.
It cleans more thoroughly. Microfiber is built to grab and hold dirt. Its fibers are far finer than a cotton mop’s, so they pick up smaller particles, and more of the microbes, that a string mop tends to leave behind or just push around.
It saves time and labor. Microfiber mops are lighter and easier to maneuver, so a crew covers more ground in less time. They also use less water and cleaning product, which trims both time and supply costs.
It’s easier on air quality. Because microfiber traps dust instead of stirring it up, there’s less fine dust floating around during and after cleaning, which matters in a building full of people.
It costs less over time. A microfiber mop costs more up front, but it’s more durable and uses less water and product, so it usually comes out ahead over its life.
Microfiber isn’t the answer for everything. A traditional string mop can still be the better call in a few cases:
– Rough surfaces. On textured tile or unsealed concrete, a string mop’s longer fibers can scrub into the texture better than flat microfiber.
– Heavy soiling. For a heavily soiled or greasy floor, those longer fibers help dislodge and lift stubborn grime.
– Tight budgets. Microfiber pays off over time, but a string mop’s lower up-front cost can matter when the budget is tight.
For most smooth commercial floors, microfiber gives you a cleaner result, faster work, and less dust in the air. String mops still have their spots, but these days they’re the exception, not the rule.
